So far, I think the best wtf-moment of 2006 is Gordon Downie's Amazon Recommendation list. Seriously, check it out. Weird, huh?
Oh, and apparently bestseller A Million Little Pieces by James Frey is entirely bullshit.
Look. I have no problem with people writing stories. Where I start to have a problem with it is when people don't acknowledge that they're fabrications - at least, not until they're pressured into it. And with Frey, it just gets worse from there. Consider that over three million people have read his novel. Three million people have bought a work that, in a supposedly non-fictional context, views addiction as a weakness, not a disease, and rejects the tenets of Alcoholics Anonymous, which have helped millions of people worldwide, including my dad's best friend, overcome something life-destroying. And redefining the definition of "memoir"? Who in the fuck does this guy think he is?
Whatever. I haven't been impressed by any of the excerpts I've read so far, but I'll take a look at it eventually.
The promised pop-culture recap will come. I'll be enduring finals until the start of February, though. Wish me luck.
